What is CoS?

CoS stands for Class of Service and refers to the different service options available with an nbn® Enterprise Ethernet connection. The Class of Service you choose will impact how much bandwidth your connection is guaranteed to have available at any given time.

We offer two Classes of Service (CoS) for nbn® Enterprise Ethernet: Low CoS and High CoS.

What is Low Class of Service (CoS)?

A Low Class of Service refers to an Enterprise Ethernet service with "best-effort bandwidth". With best-effort bandwidth, there isn't a guaranteed bandwidth amount. Your internet connection's available bandwidth will depend on how other connections on the network use the internet. Low is the default CoS and comes as standard with nbn® Enterprise Ethernet connections. A Low CoS will likely be enough for smaller businesses with basic connectivity needs.

What is High Class of Service (CoS)?

A High Class of Service is an Enterprise Ethernet service with 1/1 committed bandwidth. That means your business can always access 100% of your available bandwidth. So, if you're on a 1000/1000Mbps service, you'll always get 1000Mbps. Therefore, a High CoS is ideal for time-sensitive applications, including voice, video conferencing and CRM database queries.

A High CoS is available as an upgrade for nbn® Enterprise Ethernet connections. It's perfect if guaranteed bandwidth is crucial for your business's efficiency and continuity.

How does Class of Service impact your business internet?

Think of CoS like choosing between hiring an employee or contractor when growing your team. A contractor will come with more flexibility and is often more cost-effective than an employee. But they'll likely be working for other businesses at the same time as they're working for you. So, a contractor's ability to take on urgent tasks will depend on their workload.

On the other hand, an employee will (or should!) give 100% of their time and effort to your business during work hours. So, while employees come at a higher cost and with less flexibility, you can count on them to be all-in should something critical come up.

That's how CoS works. A low CoS means your nbn® Enterprise Ethernet is on a network that services other businesses in the area alongside yours. So, if one of your neighbours has an all-of-company video call or is uploading high volumes of content to meet a deadline, their bandwidth usage could affect your internet speed.

On the other hand, a high CoS only services your business. With a high CoS, you can work with peace of mind, knowing your bandwidth won't decrease at random times due to factors outside your control.
